How to Reach Naltar Valley
By Air: Fly Islamabad to Gilgit Airport with PIA about 1 hour. When you are going to book tickets make sure you get tickets because flights can get cancelled when the weather is bad.
By Road: You can take the Karakoram Highway to get there you will have to go via Besham and Chilas. It will take you around 14 to 16 hours by car or you can take a NATCO bus. It is an idea to stop overnight in Chilas.
Gilgit to Naltar: The distance is 40 km. It will take you about 1.5 to 2 hours to get there. For 15 to 20 km the road is not very good so you will need a 4×4 jeep to get through.Jeep hire from Gilgit bazaar costs PKR 6,000 shared or PKR 8,000–10,000 private. Shared coasters also leave from Gilgit bazaar every morning cheaper but less flexible.

Permit and Entry Requirements
Pakistani Nationals: No permit needed. Visit freely.
Foreign Nationals: You need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to visit naltar and anywhere in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Two ways to get it:
- Apply at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Gilgit free, takes a few days
- Book through a local tour operator they handle it for you
Apply one to two weeks before your trip.You will need to provide documents. These include a copy of your passport, a copy of your visa, your travel plans and a confirmation from your hotel.
Do not skip this step.No NOC means you may be turned back at the checkpoint.

There’s more things to do in naltar Valley than most people expect.
The Naltar Lakes
There are four lakes. They all look really different.The Satrangi Lake, also known as Rainbow Lake is super popular.You can get there by a 4×4 vehicle or, by hiking for 30 minutes.If you hike a bit harder you’ll get to Firoza Lake. The mountain views are amazing. Blue Lake is quiet and peaceful. Bodlok Lake is the most remote, perfect for camping. Naltar lakes look best before noon when the sunlight hits the water directly.
Ski Resort
Equipment hire is available right on-site. Even people who do not ski enjoy the chairlift ride, for the views. The national ski tournament takes place here every February.
Trekking
- Naltar Pass Trek — 4,600 m, crosses into Ishkoman Valley, guide required
- Daintar Pass Trek — 4,636 m, leads to Chalt village, very challenging
- Naltar–Pakora Trek — 8 days, views of Nanga Parbat and Rakaposhi

Wildlife
The Himalayan ibex and the snow leopards live near Lovely Park. You can find the monal, which is Pakistan’s national bird in the forest. If you want to see the ibex and the snow leopards the best time to do that is early in the morning or, at dusk when the Himalayan monal is also out.
Culture
The Naltar Mela festival brings music, polo and local food every summer. The two villages Naltar Bala and Naltar Paain are friendly and worth exploring. Horse riding is available in summer.
Camping
Best spots are Bara Pani and Kala Pani meadows. Stargazing is incredible with zero light pollution. Nights drop to 5°C even in July bring a sleeping bag rated to 0°C or lower.

Using Gilgit as a base, Naltar hotels are limited inside the valley. Staying in Gilgit gives you more options including the Serena Hotel, then day-tripping to Naltar.

Must-Try Dishes
- Chapshuro: meat-filled flatbread, the most popular street snack in Gilgit bazaar

In July and August, fresh apricots and mulberries are sold roadside near the valley. Don’t miss them.

Camping or Self-Catering If you are planning to camp or self-cater it is best to stock up on food, nuts and snacks in Gilgit before you head up to Naltar Bala. The shops in Naltar Bala are very limited. You should not count on finding supplies in the valley.
Travel Tips and Packing List
Altitude and Health
The valley is very high between 3,000 to 3,500 meters. The high passes go up to 4,600 meters. You should spend a day in Gilgit to get used to the height before you go up.If you get a headache, feel sick, tired or dizzy it could be Acute Mountain Sickness. See if it gets better. If it does not you must go down away.
What to Pack
- Warm. A down jacket. It gets cold at night in July dropping to 5°C.
- A waterproof jacket. The weather can change quickly in the afternoon.
- Good trekking shoes that support your ankles.
- Sunscreen with SPF and sunglasses to protect you from the sun.
- A small first-aid kit and a power bank to keep your devices charged.
- Cash in Pakistani Rupees. There are no ATMs after Gilgit city.
